Castles & Towers
Medieval castles and towers are a common sight throughout the Monregalese and the Langhe. The nearby Castello di Mombasiglio is also home to the Bonaparte Museum. The Torre Civica in Mondovì is open to the public and offers fantastic views of the Langhe and the Alps.
Only ruins remain of the Castello di Montaldo di Mondovì which was built in the 14th century. During an excavation of the castle site in 1984, archaelogists found stone carvings that dating back to the Iron Age. These coppeliform carvings indicate there was a settlement on the site approximately 12,000 years ago.
The Castello di Grinzane-Cavour houses a regional enoteca of Piemonte as well as an ethnographic museum of rural life and wine-making in the Langhe.
The Castello degli Acaia in is the site of Fossano's annual Palio dei Borghi horse race. Part of the festivities is an historical reinactment of Carlo Emanuele I di Savoia's visit to Fossano in 1858 on his way back from his honeymoon in Barcelona with Catherine of Austria. |
