Our History

Like many others in Piemonte, the Roà Family can trace its origins across the Alps to what is now part of France. Our family settled in the Monregalese in the 15th century and for most of the time since then, Montaldo di Mondovì has been our home.

The town was founded in the year 1,000 A.D. Montaldo is perhaps best known in Piemontese history for its resistance to the House of Savoia during the Salt Wars of 1680 and 1698. The bloody conflicts saw just how ruthless the Savoia could be in their conquest of wealth and power. Montaldo's economy was based entirely on the chestnut crop. In order to crush the revolt, the Savoia had the entire area deforested, then massacred most of the the male population and enslaved the rest to work in the royal rice fields in Vercelli.

The survivors returned to Montaldo and by 1750 the forests had grown back as before.

    Pensione Roà
From 1930 through 1972 our grandparents, Giacomo Roà and Ida Garbarino, operated a pensione from the villa, offering room and full board to visitors.
Pensione Roà was a popular destination for guests from Turin and Genoa who came to Montaldo looking for fresh air and to commune with nature. Ida was a gifted cook and delighted everyone with her tradtional dishes. Giacomo was a gregarious host who greeted guests, tended the pensione's bar and produced his own Dolcetto wine.
