Wine - The Langhe

In the Piemontese language, Langhe refers to a series of steep-sided hills separated by narrow valleys. Langhe is the name of the hilly area that lies between Mondovì and Alba along the Tanaro River and its tributary, the Belbo River. Fourteen of the sixteen wine producing zones in Cuneo Province are within the Langhe. There are literally hundreds of wine producers located within 25 miles of Villa Favolosa.

The hills near Alba are referred to as the Bassa Langa (Lower Langa) in reference to their elevation of 400 to 800 meters above sea level. This incredibly beautiful area is home to castles, charming hilltowns and rolling hills covered with some of Italy's most precious grapevines. The production zones for Barolo and Barbaresco are in the Bassa Langa.

The hills east of Mondovì are called the Langa Monregalese. Here grapevines meet grazing pastures for the prized Piemontese breed cows. This is the production zone for some of Piemonte's best cheeses and best Dolcetto wines, such as, Dolcetto di Dogliani and Dolcetto delle Langhe Monregalesi.

Nestled in between the Bassa Langa and the Langa Monregalese is an area known as the Alta Langa (Upper Langa). With higher elevations than its neighbors to the north and west, the Alta Langa is perhaps better known for its cheese than its wine.
