The Occitan Cross is the symbol of Occitania

Occitania

Occitania refers to an area that extends around the north Mediterranean where the Occitan language is spoken. This territory encompasses parts of Spain, France and Italy. The word Occitan originates from Dante who used the term "Lingua d'Òc" to describe those romance languages which used the word "Òc" for yes.

Today there are more than 10 million people who live within Occitania and about 3 million of them consider themselves proficient speakers. The Occitan language, which is similar to Catalan, has been kept alive in schools, through music and literature and now, on the internet.

Occitan Valleys

There are thirteen Occitan valleys in Cuneo Province. Occitan culture reaches as far east as our neighboring towns of Frabosa Soprana, Frabosa Sottana and Roccaforte Mondovì. These towns form an Occitan community known as the Kyé (also spelled Quié). The name is derived from the word for "I" in their Occitan dialect. There is an ethnographic museum dedicated to the Kyé culture in Frabosa Soprana.
