Wine: The Langhe

We are located between the Corsaglia and the Roburentello rivers, both of which flow into the Tanaro River. If you follow the Tanaro north from Mondovì to Alba you will be in the Langhe wine country. This hilly area is one of Italy's most important wine producing areas. Fourteen out of sixteen wine appelation zones in Cuneo Province are within the Langhe. There are literally hundreds of wineries located within 25 miles of Villa Favolosa.

The hills surrounding Alba are referred to as the Bassa Langa (Lower Langa) in reference to their elevation of 400 to 800 meters above sea level. This incredibly beautiful area is home to castles, charming hilltowns and rolling hills covered with precious Nebbiolo vines. The production zones for Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG are in the Bassa Langa.

The hills around Mondovì and northward to Dogliani are called the Langhe Monregalesi. Here grapevines meet green Alpine valleys. This is the production zone for what many people consider to be the best Dolcetto made, Dolcetto di Dogliani DOC and Dogliani DOCG. It is an exciting period for this local wine as many producers, such as Pecchenino, are elevating the Dolcetto grape to new levels. The official name of Dolcetto di Dogliani Superiore DOCG was recently changed to Dogliani DOCG in an effort to distinguish the wine from the grape. Dogliani is to the Dolcetto grape as Barolo and Barbaresco are to the Nebbiolo grape.

Nestled in between the Bassa Langa and the Langa Monregalese is an area known as the Alta Langa (Upper Langa). Known mostly for its fantastic cheeses, the Alta Langa is also produces some of Piemonte's best classic-method sparkling wine. Alta Langa DOCG is made from local Chardonnay and Pinot Nero grapes that have been grown at the altitude of 250 meters above sea level.

Located just north of the Langhe and across the Tanaro River is Cuneo Province's other important wine producing area, the Roero. The Nebbiolo grape is also grown in the Roero and the wine made from it is called Roero DOCG. However, this area is best known for its white wines, Roero Arneis DOCG and Moscato d'Asti DOCG. Although its name is associated with neighboring Asti Province, the truth is that the heart of the Moscato d'Asti production zone is in Cuneo Province.
